Radio Communication Equipment
Two-Way Radios
There are many types of two-way radios available for use. In this section we will post the equipment used in ARES operations. AARES Inc. does not advertise for any particular brand or model of radio; the choice of equipment is up to the individual volunteer communicators that choose to work within our group. As AARES Inc. grows and acquires equipment to use in emergencies we will train our volunteers in the proper use of this equipment.
Radio Accessories
- There is a wide range of accessories for radio equipment, including headsets, microphones, and batteries. In an emergency situation there are two main criteria that should be taken into consideration when choosing your equipment:
- The type of radio should be capable of being used reliably in potentially extreme conditions.
- The equipment can be reliably operated during an off-grid situation.
Base Stations
Base stations are a great addition to any communication network. With features like long-range communication and customizable channels, base stations can be tailored to specific needs.
Repeaters
For those needing to extend the range of their communication network, the local Arctic Amateur Rdio Club has repeaters which are the perfect solution. With advanced features like dual-mode operation and digital-analog compatibility, those repeaters are perfect for any emergency operations when needed.
Hand Held Radios
Hand held radios are perfect for emergency communications uses particularly if called upon to be mobile in the field during any potntial deployment. With features like long battery life and easy-to-use controls, hand held radios are a great addition to any communication network.
Digital Mobile Radios
Digital Mobile Radios add a dimension to emergency communications in that when properly networked DMR radios can reach out well beyond the normally affected area. They can operate in both analog and digital modes and be networked over internet and peer-to-peer operations.

Who We Are
Our History
- At ARCTIC AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICE Inc.,
- The purposes for which AARES is organized are to provide disaster preparedness, emergency communications and public service communications as indicated below. The purposes of the Corporation are exclusively charitable as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation. In pursuing such purposes, the Corporation shall not act to impair its eligibility for exemption under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended.
- A. Emergency public safety communications in support of served agencies operating within Interior Alaska and any other lawful purpose.
- B. Support of surrounding Boroughs or any other locations in the State of Alaska pursuant to AARES or ARRL® or ARES® policy and guidelines.
- C. Reliable primary and secondary communications links for governmental agencies and/or non-profit organizations as needed.
- D. Training of volunteers in amateur radio emergency services using Simulated Emergency Tests (SET) and other appropriate training, including FEMA and ICS qualifications, and other training as deemed applicable to functions within AARES guidelines.
- E. Instruction of the public on subjects useful to the individual and beneficial to the community for emergency communications and preparedness.
- F. Solicit and raise funds to support and advance the programs and activities of AARES.
- G. AARES may at the discretion of the Board become a RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services) group as well.
AARES Guidelines
AARES members are the personification of amateur radio to the public and to our governmental and non-governmental agencies whom we serve. As such, we have elected to publish guidelines under which AARES registered volunteers will operate. AARES members operating in such a capacity are required to abide by these standards.
- ARES members will conduct themselves with professional conduct, respect, and courtesy to those whom we serve. We will be listeners and communicators.
- AARES members will not act in any manner so as or be perceived as agents or employees of the agencies whom we serve. We are a service agency and have no authority to act on behalf of the agency.
- AARES members will not use profanity, vulgar language, or language or expressions which may be considered derogatory when in public.
- AARES members will not park in restricted areas, unless specifically authorized or invited to do so by the agencies we serve.
- AARES members will not use flashing lights while vehicles are underway. The use of flashing yellow lights is permitted only when vehicles are stationary for the purposes of collision avoidance. All vehicle parking will be at the discretion of the Alaksa State Troopers or the governing authority on scene.
- Any member of AARES while responding to, or at a location to provide the services of AARES, will adhere to all driving and road standards and laws of the State of Alaska. If in doubt, please inquire with Net Control and they will request clarification from the Emergency Operation Center.
- AARES members will not solicit contributions or gifts, merchandise, or services from any individuals or businesses while serving the local EOC or any agency served. All solicitations using the name of Arctic Amateur Radio Emergency Services Inc. or associated, related names such as ARES® or ARRL® must be approved in writing by those associated agencies, in advance.
- No AARES member (including AARES leadership) is authorized to use the name of served agencies without their prior written permission.
- AARES members will not use the logos or identifying marks of the agencies that we serve without prior approval in writing by those agencies and the approval of the Borad of Directors of AARES.
- All prospective ARES members must be able to pass their respective served EOC credentialing requirements.
- These requirements are not negotiable.
Our Services
AARES Inc Membership
A. Membership shall consist of all licensed amateur radio operators or those seeking amateur radio licenses who demonstrate a sincere desire to serve in providing emergency communications.
B. All members are volunteers who support the mission of AARES.
C. AARES pledges not to discriminate against prospective members, or audiences because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, or membership in any other other organizations.
